As many of you know,
our son Mike was
married this summer to
Beth Burrell.  It was a
beautiful wedding and
we had a wonderful
time with family.  They
honeymooned in
Hawaii and now live in
Los Angeles, California.
Rancho Sordo Mudo and Beyond
We are back in the swing of things with the start of a new school year in Mexico.  We have 6 new
students who have brought a fresh mix to the student body.  Four of them are from Tijuana and already
know some Mexican Sign Language so the adjustment has been relatively smooth.  One of the boys is
named Adrian and he knows some amazing “slight of hand” tricks that he has performed for us.  Wendy
is extremely shy but very sweet natured.  Then we have brothers, Fernando and Eduardo which are our
only siblings.  We also have two little girls, Lesly and Celeste who are ahhhhdorable!  We will have
many opportunities to share the love of Christ this year with all these dear children.

We will both continue mentoring the students – Howard teaching construction trades and Janet teaching
the sewing and chapel classes.  Now that the sewing girls have some experience, they will be using
their skills to reach out.  This year they will make Linus Quilts to donate to children in need.  Along with
our involvement in these areas, we still have our primary assignments of Short Term Missions Group
Coordinator (Howard), Assistant to Luke (Janet) and the Home Church that Howard teaches at our
house on Sunday.

We won’t be able to resist sharing highlights from this year, however our next few newsletters will focus
more on our plans for Guatemala.
October 2008
Guatemala Update – each one of these items is also
a matter of prayer.
We have determined the location for our first Christian
Center for the Deaf in Guatemala.  It will be in Ciudad
San Cristóbal, which is just outside Guatemala City.
It is the largest city in the municipality of Mixco, which
has approximately 400,000 people.  We are still
looking for a building that is sufficient for a church and
training center.

We have also started the process of applying for an
Authorization to open a school.  Our partner in
Guatemala, Thelma, is doing all the preliminary
legwork on this.  Thank you, Thelma!  She is a very
busy lady with two small children and active in
ministry.  Please keep her in your prayer.

We had a great meeting with Joni and Friends
recently and we are looking at ways we may
collaborate when we hang our shingle in Guatemala.
They are very well networked and are willing to come
alongside ministries that are in accord with their
mission statement.  Our meeting was mutually
encouraging and we are praying about the next step.
Quotes from the Playground
The other day some of the children were playing outside and found a
butterfly.  After sufficient handling, it was in obvious distress.  One of the
children looked up and asked with a very inquisitive but worried face,
“Can you hear the butterfly crying?”
Mixco is just west of Guatemala City.
