October 2009
This is an exciting project and we are ready for the task. As you can imagine, it takes a lot of prayer and
funding to accomplish all that we are setting out to do. We are strengthened for the job through your prayers
and mobilized because of your funding.
We encourage you to pray about partnering with us in this ministry. Even a small gift can change a child's life
forever by giving them the gift of language and an adult's life by empowering them with the skills and training
they need to acquire a job.
For more information on any of these opportunities, please email us at janet@deafdisciples.com or visit the
Partnership page on this site.
Together on the journey!

COOL HAND LUKE
We met a deaf man in Antigua that
did not know his name but he had
a hat that said "KOOL" so we
lovingly nick named him Cool Hand
Luke. He was typical of many of
the deaf we met - they had no
language in which to communicate
and no life skills in which to
participate in society. They are
hungry for interaction and starving
for the hope that we have within us.
JESUS
We had the joy of meeting several deaf children on our survey
trip. Jesus is 8 years old and is typical of all the deaf children we
met...a little sponge when we started talking with our hands!
Jesus has little opportunity for an education and an even smaller
opportunity to learn about the One who shares his name!
These people and many others are why we have designed a plan for a comprehensive Community Center for
the Deaf which will include:
- Church for the deaf
- For LUKE and others like him we will offer language classes and job skills. One aspect of our job
training will include a bakery where we will train and offer the jobs to our deaf adults.
- For JESUS and the other children like him, we will provide sign language classes, tutoring in school
subjects, and Bible classes.
- For Gustavo, Aura and others with a desire to serve the Lord, we will offer Bible classes and leadership
training in order for them to reach out to more deaf in surrounding cities.
SURVEY TRIP HIGHLIGHTS We recently returned from a one-month trip to Guatemala with the intention of accessing the spiritual, educational, and economic conditions of the deaf. We met with several people who are connected to the deaf in Guatemala and God made clear to us how we can reach this forgotten group of people. We are excited about our plan for the initial 12 months on the field and we would like to introduce you to some of the people we met and our strategy for ministering to them.
