Our five classes are broken down by ability rather than by age and the average class has
six students. The primary focus for the younger grades is to teach them sign language as
their first language and then to teach them to read and write in Spanish.
Our reading program is called Patterned Language and was designed for the sole
purpose of teaching the Deaf to read. It is a color-coded system and has proven to be very
effective for the Deaf. This reading program is used consistently throughout the whole
school.
Throughout the school year, we offer several extra-curricular activities, such as, an Art
Show, Math Month, Spelling Bee, Story Night and Day of Prayer. In order to reinforce the
meaning of the Mexican holidays, our teachers lead the students in a reenactment of each
major holiday, complete with costumes, mock battles and traditional food.
